NCTM is the world’s largest organization dedicated to improving mathematics education for all students. The Council provides guidelines for excellence in mathematics education.
NCTM is a public voice of mathematics education, providing vision, leadership, and professional development to support teachers in ensuring mathematics learning of the highest quality for all students. Founded in 1920, NCTM is the world’s largest mathematics education organization, with 100,000 members and 250 Affiliates throughout the United States and Canada.
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics is a public voice of mathematics education, providing vision, leadership, and professional development to support teachers in ensuring mathematics learning of the highest quality for all students.
In accordance with the mission, the NCTM Board has adopted the following multi-year strategic priorities that is provide guidance and resources for establishing and enacting mathematics curriculum that is coherent, focused, well articulated and consistent with Principles and Standards for School Mathematics. Also to increase the value and benefits of membership, and support Council growth; engage in political and public advocacy to focus decision makers on improving learning and teaching mathematics. Advance professional development by creating a coherent framework of audience-specific products and services. Bring existing research into the classroom, and identify and encourage research that addresses the needs of classroom practice.
The Council is committed to a constructive public dialogue to ensure a mathematics education of the highest possible quality for all students. To this end, the Council has adopted the following legislative platform.
Why Advocate?NCTM serves as the governmental relations voice for mathematics teachers. Our current government relations efforts are focused at the federal level through interactions with members of Congress, and the Department of Education in Washington.
Professional DevelopmentNCTM provides professional development for teachers to ensure mathematics learning of the highest quality for all students. Recognizing the demands placed on teachers and the availability of funding resources, it offers a broad development program.
Professional DevelopmentresourceResources for the Professional Development Focus of the Year are available for elementary, middle and high school. The Focus of the Year topic for the 2004-05 school year is Developing Algebraic Thinking: A Journey from Preschool to High School.
Nctm StandardsWe live in a mathematical world. Whenever we decide on a purchase, choose an insurance or health plan, or use a spreadsheet, we rely on mathematical understanding. The World Wide Web, CD-ROMs, and other media disseminate vast quantities of information.
Executive SummaryWe live in a time of extraordinary and accelerating change. New knowledge, tools, and ways of doing and communicating mathematics continue to emerge and evolve.
Updated Mathematics StandardsNCTM was the first professional organization to develop and release standards to raise student expectations for school mathematics in 1989. Since their release, most states have adopted standards.
