CHHCS was established to explore ways to strengthen the well being of children and youth through effective health programs and health care services in schools.
The Center for Health and Health Care in Schools (CHHCS) is a nonpartisan policy and program resource center located at The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services.
CHHCS builds on a 20-year history of testing strategies to strengthen health care delivery systems for children and adolescents. For the past decade, with support from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Center staff and consultants have worked with institutional leaders, state officials and clinical providers to maximize outcomes for children through more effective health programming in schools. Health programs range from those that help students adopt healthy habits to those that foster a physically and emotionally healthy school environment. Health services include screenings and referrals to community resources as well as services to support students with special needs. They also include primary and preventive physical and mental health care. Core support for CHHCS is provided by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Additional funding comes from the Bureau of Primary Health Care, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. We TEST model programs to expand dental and mental health services to children through school-based health centers; we also ANALYZE policy options for organizing and financing health programs in schools. We do ADVISE government officials as well as leaders in schools and health care institutions on how to provide cost-effective and accountable health programs in schools.
Alcohol ScreeningMost adults who drink alcoholic beverages consume safe and healthy amounts. For others, unsafe drinking patterns increase their risk for injury, illness or future alcohol problems. For 1 in 13 American adults, alcohol abuse causes harm to their health.
Face The Issue-You Are Not AloneFace The Issue works to raise awareness of common emotional and physical health issues faced by young adults and to build a supportive community without judgement.
When Drinking Becomes A ProblemAlcoholism is a rough word to deal with. Nobody is too young to have trouble with booze-alcoholism is an illness. It can hit anyone. It doesn`t matter how long you`ve been drinking or what you`ve been drinking. It`s what drinking does to you that counts.
Al-Anon/AlateenAl-Anon (which includes Alateen for younger members) has been offering hope and help to families and friends of alcoholics. It is estimated that each alcoholic affects the lives of at least four other people... alcoholism is truly a family disease.
The Benefits Of QuittingQuitting smoking has immediate as well as long-term benefits, reducing risks for stroke, cancers, coronary heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, ulcer, peripheral artery disease, and low-birth-weight infants.
