One of its targets to halve the proportion of people living without access to clean drinking water and basic sanitation. Access to safe water for all is an essential component of poverty reduction.
The Global Water Partnership is a working partnership among all those involved in water management: government agencies, public institutions, private companies, professional organizations, multilateral development agencies and others committed to the Dublin-Rio principles. Today, this comprehensive partnership actively identifies critical knowledge needs at global, regional and national levels, helps design programs for meeting these needs, and serves as a mechanism for alliance building and information exchange on integrated water resources management.
The mission of the Global Water Partnership is to "support countries in the sustainable management of their water resources." The GWP`s objectives are to clearly establish the principles of sustainable water resources management. They identify gaps and stimulate partners to meet critical needs within their available human and financial resources, support action at the local, national, regional or riverbasin level that follows principles of sustainable water resources management. They also help match needs to available resources. This awareness, together with the need for participatory institutional mechanisms related to water, called for a new coordinating organisation. This initiative was based on promoting and implementing integrated water resources management through the development of a worldwide network that could pull together financial, technical, policy and human resources to address the critical issues of sustainable water management.
Regional PartnershipsSince its inception, the GWP has built up a network of Regional Partnerships which bring various sectors and interest groups together to identify and discuss their common water problems and to develop action plans based on IWRM.
Consulting PartnersConsulting Partners are the Members of GWP. The Consulting Partners meet once a year to review reports from the Steering and Technical Committees, appoint the Chair of the Partnership, and elect and appoint members of the Steering Committee.
Financial PartnersExternal support agencies interested in water resources management are brought together twice a year by the Global Water Partnership to provide a forum for information exchange and debate on the water priorities that need to be addressed.
From Vision To ActionGWP held a programme planning meeting in HR Wallingford, UK from February, 18-21 2001. Three representatives from each of the GWP regions met to discuss how their regional work integrates into the overall work programme of the Partnership.
The Associated ProgrammesThe various types of assistance they provide include advice on management approaches, policy awareness and dialogue, expert knowledge and information, and help with research, development, and training.
Managing WaterThere are more demands for our limited water supply by people, agriculture and industry. We are dependent on our environmental partners, the flora and fauna have theirs, too. We are encouraging interested parties to work to manage our water better.
