Local Government New Zealand - the organisation that represents the national interests of all 86 councils of New Zealand.
Our National Council, who are the elected leadership of Local Government New Zealand, prepare a workplan and annual report that outlines priorities and projects in any given year. They will choose projects according to criteria, including: the number of councils affected by the issue, the magnitude of the issue, the priority and timing of that issue or its potential impact.
Local Government New Zealand presents a consensus view and is the only organisation that can speak on behalf of all councils in New Zealand.
Goals and Key Activities

Local Government SectorLocal Government Sector is one of the two branches of government in New Zealand and a creature of statute but autonomous and accountable to communities. The Local authorities comprise of 12 regional councils and 74 territorial authorities.
Roles Of Local GovernmentReforms councils have reduced in number from 675 to 86 covering a wider range of functions, adopted a range of planning and accountability tools that have significantly upgraded the quality of both their political and their professional management.

Other ConferencesA series of Sustainable Tourism Planning Workshops were designed to assist council planners and strategic development staff manage the impacts of future visitor growth, and integrate stakeholder plans and activities into council plans and policies.
Past ProjectsThe New Zealand Local Government Toolkit for Child & Youth Participation was developed for councils as a resource with practical examples and advice to help them in their planning and services for children and young people.
Maori In Local GovernmentIn 2001, 16 of the 52 Maori elected members were women, in 1995, 12 of the 39 Maori elected members were women and in 1998, 21 of the 48 Maori elected members were women.
